This month’s focus is “Summer Vibes”. The list has been carefully created to reflect a variety of genres, themes, artistic style and publishers, but the wild card option is also available.

This month’s prompt

(The purpose of the prompt is to help participants develop a more critical reading of the form, but it is optional)

The prompt this based is based on one of the stages of Kenneth Clark’s framework for looking at art (you can find out more here): recollection, which in the context of looking at picture books, happens when you make connections with your own experiences and knowledge of childhood, which for adults can also result in nostalgic feelings. This, according to Arizpe and Styles (Children Reading Pictures: Interpreting Visual Texts, 2003) converges in a “text-to-life moment” (text here being used as encompassing narrative forms in a picture book). Whatever happens at the recollection phase, it is unique to each reader, based on their own knowledge and experiences.
