During his comment over …., Anthony Browne on the fact that many illustrators today go for the retro look.  I couldn’t agree more and I know I often find myself using the words “vintage” and “retro” when commenting on illustration. A couple of years ago, I came across an American illustrator which I had never heard of before (I might have done possibly as a child as her books were published in France but certainly do not recall it). Her name is Gyi Fujikawa, and her artwork is most definitely retro.
Fujikawa (1908-1998) illustrated over 50 books in her lifetime, and wrote a considerable amount of those too, and is recognized as one of the first mainstream illustrators to include children of many races in her drawings. Something that we take for granted these days of course but which was not so readily accepted
