Today I am delighted to welcome upcoming illustrator Emma Yarlett! Bear’s Big Bottom, written by Steve Smallman and illustrated by Emma, is part of the Summer Rocks list and she has kindly put together a Fabulous Five Summer Special selection.

Highly commended in the Macmillan prize 2011, Emma Yarlett began her career as an author and Illustrator whilst still studying Illustration at Falmouth University. She now paints, draws, collages, designs, doodles, splatters and sketches for a living from her studio at home, and loves every minute of it!

Five Fabulous Picture Books for the Summer

The King of Space
Jonny DuddleThis book is great! I picked this one, as it has a fantastic storyline as well as brilliant illustrations (and a super dooper poster and sticker sheet). The cinematic styling and etherial lighting throughout the book is beautiful, and I love the way that as soon as you open the book you are instantly invited into the brilliantly crafted world of Rex. Jonny’s imagination is enviably creative, and needless to say I am a massive fan of his work.
Weasels Elys Dolan
Elys and I exhibited together way back in 2011 in the Macmillan Prize commended and winner’s exhibition at Foyles. I loved this book back then, and I love it even more now. Some absolute comedy gold moments, great sub-plots and a storyline that literally flows off the page… Fingers crossed there is a sequel! Elys illustrative style is definitely one to watch.
I Want My Hat Back
Jon KlassenAn absolute classic by Klassen- this one blew my socks off! Retro to the core, dry as the desert, and overflowing with charisma, this simple book has such a rare charm it makes it unforgettable.
Around the world with Mouk: A Trail of Adventure
Marc BoutavantMarc is an illustration legend. I love the level of detail he puts into every single page, it is just overflowing with busyness and character, something I love to do in my own work. His chaotic colour schemes and fun characters make this one a firm favourite of mine. Marc Boutavant’s work is such a joy to look at.
Tiny Little Fly
Michael Rosen & Kevin WaldronThe pages of this book have such a beautiful vintage quality that I absolutely adore. I also really love the vigour of the illustrations and how each animals character is wonderfully put across to the reader. The type in Tiny Little Fly is also particularly lovely, and really well matched to the illustrations. I do love a bit of nice typography!
